"Happy Days are Here Again" went the
most popular tune of 1930, but for most Depression-era Americans, the sentiment
amounted to wishful thinking. In 1932, Herbert Hoover was defeated by Franklin
Delano Roosevelt by a landslide. It quickly became apparent after this runaway
victory that FDR embodied and indomitable optimism and a speaking voice which
seemed tailor-made for the medium of radio. He began delivering regular radio
addresses to the nation known as "fireside chats." And FDR wasn't the only thing
Americans were listening to. Now with unemployment at an all-time high, more
Americans than ever were relying upon radio for their evening entertainment.
